EO-based services to enhance resilient reconstruction in cyclone affected areas

The collaboration of EO4SD-DRR and the World Bank in Mozambique has as main user the Post-cyclone Idai Reconstruction Office (GREPOC).

The aim of the collaboration focuses on the provinces Sofala and Cabo Delgado. Especially Cabo Delgado is a fragile area where field observations are limited (the same is true for some parts of Sofala). The aim of the collaboration is to identify and categorize areas and buildings damaged by the cyclones Idai and Kenneth and the status of reconstruction one year after the disaster, in order to work better for an increased resilience.

These sessions were focused on technicians and experts that can be interested in EO techniques for application on disaster reconstruction monitoring. They counted with around 30 assistants from different entities such as Post-cyclone Idai Reconstruction Office (GREPOC), UN-Habitat Mozambique, Agência Nacional de Desenvolvimento Espacial (PDE) and Direcção Nacional de Gestão de Recursos Hídricos (DNGRH).

The first session was focused on explaining the advantages of EO-based methodologies and how the products are obtained and can be generated with a limited costassociated. The second day, the cluster tried to provide the assistants with a more applied session. An introduction to satellite imagery and an overview of Earth Observation methodologies was provided. Moreover, the cluster provided with some notions of GIS and databases to finish the event focusing on damage and reconstruction evaluation with satellite imagery.
